Depression Counselling
Life is full of ups and downs that affect our mood - sadness and helplessness are common to us all from time to time. We often incorrectly refer to these temporary states as ''depression.''
As one of the most common mental health problems, one in five people may require depression counselling at some point in their lives. Each year, around one million Australians grapple with it, with approximately one in six people diagnosed at some point in their lives. With help and support, you can recover.
Should I seek depression counselling?
A chronic sense of emptiness and despair are the key characteristics of this illness. Not just a temporary ''low,'' it can become difficult to function as before. Common symptoms include:-
Feeling hopeless and helpless about your current situation and future
-
Lifelessness or feeling apathetic
-
Lack of interest in hobbies and spending time with friends
-
Moodiness or irritability
-
Feeling angry, aggressive and restless
-
Difficulty concentrating
-
Changes in sleep habits - either insomnia or oversleeping
-
Self-loathing
-
Changes in appetite - Increase or decrease
All of the above are common from time to time, but experiencing many of these symptoms for an extended period of time may be a sign that you are suffering from depression. Counselling can help establish the causes and treatment for your symptoms. Depression counselling is one of the key steps in recovery.
What causes it?
Although research is ongoing, we know that it is the result of mood-regulating neurotransmitters not functioning properly. There are a number of factors that may play a role in causing or triggering depression. Counselling can help determine these causes. These factors include:-
Genetic predisposition
-
Stress
-
Personality type
-
Aging
-
Other illnesses
-
Drugs and alcohol
-
Life-changing events
Types
While the severity of symptoms may vary, so too may the very nature of depression. Counselling can assist in recovery from all types, which include:- Psychotic - characterised by periods with symptoms of psychosis, for example hallucinations and paranoia
- Bipolar - involving periods of feeling depressed and periods of feeling high, or manic
- Postnatal - experienced in the months after a woman has given birth
- Dysthemic - chronic but less severe
- Cyclothymic - involving chronic mood swings, possibly leading to Bipolar disorder
- Seasonal Affective Disorder - where mood varies depending on weather or seasonal changes
If left untreated, the severity of symptoms can increase, leading to major chronic depression, which can be more difficult to treat. Seeking depression counselling as soon as you recognise the symptoms will make the recovery process faster and easier.
